Health during pregnancy is directly related to the health of the baby you carry in your womb and will depend on how you take care of yourself during pregnancy. The important thing is that you eat healthy and varied. This way you will be gaining the ideal weight for the best development of your baby.

2. Take care of your teeth and gums during pregnancy:Dental care is extremely important during pregnancy. Pregnancy affects every inch of our body, including our teeth and gums. During pregnancy, dental plaque develops more quickly and your gums can become inflamed, infected, and even bleed. For this reason, it is important that you visit your dentist during pregnancy.

3. Give up tobacco if you are pregnant:If you are a smoker, the best time to quit is before pregnancy. Remember that when you smoke, your baby will be smoking too. Similarly, if you don't smoke, but others in your family do, remind them that second-hand cigarette smoke hurts your baby too. Set certain rules to reduce the amount of cigarette smoke in your home. Cigarette smoke stresses our bodies instead of relaxing us. When you smoke a cigarette, your heart beats faster and your blood pressure rises… and so does your baby.

4. Refuse alcoholic beverages in pregnancy:When you have an alcoholic beverage, your baby is consuming alcohol too. Alcohol crosses the placental barrier during pregnancy, it can cause fetal alcohol syndrome in your baby, the biggest trigger for deformations in children. Sometimes, the harms of having consumed alcohol during pregnancy are not visible once the baby is born, however, the long-term consequences are very serious. Even if you drink alcohol in small amounts, it is dangerous. The best thing you can do for your baby is to avoid all types of alcoholic beverages during pregnancy. Any type of alcoholic drink is dangerous, since there is the same amount of alcohol in a beer as in a glass of wine or liquor.

5. Be careful with medications during pregnancy:It is very important that you inform your obstetrician about all the medications you are taking, as the medications can cross the placental barrier and reach the baby. This includes medicines prescribed by a doctor, medicines sold without a prescription, natural products, and vitamins. As a precautionary measure, you should only take those medications prescribed by your doctor.

6. Run away from drugs in pregnancy:If you use drugs like marijuana, cocaine, heroin, crack, or any other, your baby is also using these drugs. Drugs are dangerous for both you and your baby. All drugs can affect your baby, and it can create dependence on these drugs, from your womb and being born with addiction.

7. Control caffeine in pregnancy:Many people consume caffeine without knowing it… since caffeine is not only in coffee. Tea, cola, chocolate, and some medications also contain caffeine. Although the exact effects of caffeine on the fetus are not known, we do know that caffeine is a stimulant that alters the nervous system. Therefore, it is a good idea to reduce the amount of caffeine we consume. The recommendations would be to drink no more than two cups of coffee or tea a day, read the labels of food, drinks and medicines, and select those products that contain less caffeine.

8. Avoid the spread of diseases:Try to avoid contact with people who have infectious diseases of a contagious nature such as those related to the respiratory tract that cause colds, coughs, sore throats or flu. If you get sick, you should inform the doctor. Do not take any medication without your doctor's recommendation. Apart from medical treatment, it is advisable to rest and drink plenty of fluids.

9. Take precautions when traveling by car and plane:Whenever you drive your car, use the seat belt correctly passing it under the belly so that your baby suffers less in the event of an impact. If you have to travel by plane, you should bear in mind that many airlines require medical authorization to travel during pregnancy, especially in the last months of pregnancy. Find out about its requirements in your state with the airline before buying the ticket.

Some recommended tips for traveling pregnant are: wear comfortable shoes (to avoid swelling), drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, walk inside the plane every hour to keep your legs circulating, and lastly, don't cross your legs. If the country where you are going to travel requires a certain type of vaccination, better consult your doctor first. This will tell you whether or not the required vaccinations are safe for your pregnancy.

10. Evaluate if your work affects your pregnancy:In most cases, you can continue working while pregnant. However, if you work with chemicals or have to stay on your feet for too long, ask your doctor about the feasibility of requesting sick leave.
